You are understanding it correctly. I learned using a 50mm lens, which on a 35 "full frame" camera is like what your eyes see. It's good to zoom with your feet to see different perspectives. Zoom lenses are great for convenience, but I love using prime lenses. Today's cameras do really well with low light, but still love the light capturing ability of primes and also the beautiful broke his that can be achieved with many primes.
