Is your kiddo a pup? If so, they may tear more as pups bc of teething. You want to look out for greenish discharge or if it's overly smelly, as this can indicate an eye infection...for that, you'd need a vet.

A dedicated small toothbrush for this purpose is a great idea! We use a flea comb with closely spaced teeth, but a soft toothbrush is even better for separating the hairs and removing the gunk.
We start with a wet cotton ball to soften any boogies.
If there is staining, the hair has to grow out completely without any further staining. I finally got rid of Teddy's stains, and now Max has them.
