Well, as the above-mentioned "misinterpreter," I will elaborate. If the health department inspector saw your dog or any other pet in the grocery store, they could probably close the place down. At the very least, the store woud have to be cleaned and inspected further. The laws might require that fresh food be trashed.

Service dogs have to meet strict training and health guidelines and the agency ensures they are up-to-date on their shots. So when a service dog -- which is allowed by federal law to enter establishments -- comes into a store, it is known they are current on vaccines and healthy.

Maybe the wording the manager used wasn't correct but it is true that he would be in serious trouble for having a pet in his store -- and all it would take is for one shopper to call the health department and say there was a pet in the grocery store. When there's a report, there has to be an investigation.
