Anytime my Scottie has upset stomach, I withhold food. This is based on my research as well as my vet's advice. He's 5.5 lbs. As others mentioned, it gives the stomach a chance to rest and recover and excrete all the bad bacteria/gas/crap out. And definitely, no treats. And when I return to feeding, I give a little at a time to make sure his poop is good again.

From my experience, even if it's not liquid diarrhea, it's still an upset stomach. Excessive stool is mild upset stomach. In my opinion, I think the stomach is not liking what he's eating so it's excreting it ASAP instead of absorbing it all. Good food yields small and less poop. Bad food (if stomach doesn't like it), yields lots of poop.
