We had Samsung front loaders before. They just seemed weird to me. The water takes a while to fill also. We didn't get the pedestals bc I'm short so I didn't think it would be an issue. So you just squat down and change from the washer to the dryer without bending over the washer, then bending over the other way for the dryer. But they were so deep that I couldn't reach to the back, so still I'd have to get up a bit. Not as easy as I thought.
As for the shelf, we do have a shelf above, it's just higher up.
