I also saw a veterinary ophthalmologist for Tootsy's eye weeping and black clumps. She said the weeping was due to a congenital defect in the breed causing ingrowing hairs and this causes the weeping. A fungus start to grow causing the discoloration and black clumps. She said that it is a breed problem and that surgery seldom works so she would not recommend it. She said to wipe Tootsy eyes each day with a sterile saline eye solution, which I get from Amazon, using cotton pads and making sure to use a clean pad for each wipe. Tootsy hated it. I had to use a flea comb to get rid of all the gunk. I phoned opthalmologist and told her how uncomfortable Tootsy was finding it and she told me to do it more frequently, if the gunk is building up during the day. She feels the discomfort was due to the gunk being 'pulled' off and so I must not allow it to accumulate. This is what I do now and have not found it necessary to use the flea comb anymore. She still doesn't like it, but it is over quickly now, as there is not much to remove. Talk about a high maintenance breed!! Oh, I did try using mineral water instead of tap water, but there was no improvement.
