home again's website . i believe those two are the 2 most popular microchips in the US and used by shelters nationwide. the site's faq's should answer most of your concerns otherwise they have a customer service number you can call to ask more detailed questions.
i think the idea is that once the chip is in, it's not suppose to move. it should not be detectable by touch so even with a toy breed show dog that's microchipped the judges would not be able to detect the microchip during inspection.
when i had bunjee microchipped they also scanned him to make sure it's working. they basically wanded his back, from the base of the neck to mid back for a scan.
