I live in the northeast where the possibility of a tick borne illness is very high. It is for this reason that I want a very effective product that is the safest for my dogs specifically. I wouldn't consider Nexguard because it does not seem to repel ticks and they will usually attach before they are killed. I would rather not have ticks on the dogs at all but everyone has told me nothing is 100% effective. So I'll go with 90% and repelling ticks safely at a very affordable price. I just can't risk encephalitis from a tick borne infection in a dog already compromised as an epileptic or dogs that are elderly. If that means using a collar, then so be it. I'm also not a huge fan of new stuff -- people had high hopes for trifexxis and there were lots of issues supposedly. If it works for you, great, but I think people don't consider less expensive more effective options so that's why I posted on this thread.
I totally understand. I personally found that things that say they repell ticks haven't. I got lucky because we moved, same area but different kind of land so it's not huge difference but less ticks. I am in Md which my vets swears is the tick capital of the world lol so we worry about ticks a lot too. In the end all of these chemicals end up in the blood stream wether pill, chew, topical or collar. I really talked at length with my vet about it before deciding. Im not generally a fan of new things either because it takes awhile for things to show up and get reported. My vet had been using it on her dogs since it came out and everyone who works at the office tried it because the first dose is free and then decided they liked it so they continued it. There was only one case of issues with one of her patients and that was a larger breed puppy that was tired and sleepy the day the dose was given to him. My vet also said out of all the dogs in the testing only a few had seizures and it was only dogs who had a history of them them but not all dogs that had a history of them. Obviously I would not use it if Callie had a seizure history not sure what I would use because I haven't been in that situation. I think we both do what is best for our dogs and love them very much
