Do what is best for Reese...and that sounds as if giving him up is the best decision for his safety and the enjoyment of a family pet for y'all. I tell people all the time that I do not place with families with small children and there are several reasons. One is that the family might have to make this heart-breaking decision. Another is because the very thing that makes a child a loving, gentle pet owner is the same thing that has to be considered when it is time for the child to become the doggy police with their friends.
The sweetest and gentlest kids can have very rough friends and it is not fair of the pet owner to expect other children to be as gentle with a Yorkie as the dog needs..
DO NOT FEEL so bad at making this decision. The breeder from whom you got Reese should be happy to take him back and refund all or a portion of your money. They share some responsibility in this situation, too. I do feel sad for your family BUT I think it is extremely important that you help your children understand that this is NOT their fault. Sometimes we just have to try things and keep trying til we find the best fit. In your family a medium to larger size dog might be the best choice. remember you are gonna be an empty nester some day and a little Yorkie will be the perfect fit...
