We do love him so much and getting rid of him is the last thing we want to do

We are trying and I guess that's all we can do. We will seek out a different trainer again and start from scratch. We are tying to change our thinking so much, we really are I suppose it will just take time.

Yes, that's it! Time and dedication and the willingness to consider alternate ways. If you are able to give all of this, then you will succeed. I had Teddy for 8 months from a puppy and I thought I had him trained and I found out he was peeing in my house when I was away due to separation anxiety. I blamed myself, him, the breeder everyone and everything. In the end, I had to accept that he had an issue but I didn't have to contribute to it by doing things which made him even more insecure. So, I had to research anxiety in toy dogs, visit the vet for advice, came to YT!, change the way I did things, change my expectations of him etc. Daily, I am learning from my dog and he learns from me. It's a relationship that is challenging yet satisfying because he loves me, wants to please me and I want him to be happy in his very short life which is shared with me.

Please keep coming here for advice. Are you in the UK? If so, call your local RSPCA for a behaviorist recommendation. They will recommend the behaviorist they use to ensure dogs are adoptable. I'm in Leicester and I was not happy with my 'trainer' so refuse to recommend him but I didn't go through the RSPCA for a recommendation. I relied on 'recommendations' which were rigged by him...lol I got ripped off and fooled!!!!! haha

Anyway, hope to see you around and learn about progress
