Patellas are a very common problem in toy breeds and we will never eradicate it completely, even if only dogs with normal patellas are bred. Many reputable breeders are okay with breeding dogs that have a grade 1 LP. I do feel like a grade 2 or above however would probably not be a great candidate for breeding though. Also, you have to see what your dog is producing. You can have a dog with normal patellas produce puppies with patellas that require surgery and that dog would need to be eliminated from a breeding program. There is so much research and thought that goes into breeding correctly....as Gemy said it's not always an all or nothing, black and white, thing....rarely is actually.
To the OP, good luck in your search. |
I'm not sure you can tell my attitude of typed letters on a page sadly that happens a lot on message boards. I know two dogs with no LP can produce a dog with LP but I personally think taking the chance by breeding a dog with LP is to risky and not something I would be comfortable with or buying from somebody with. I would like to think at some point that the gene that carries it can be determined and we can try to get rid of it but I'm sure everyone feels that way with any genetic illness. It seems like playing Russian roulette to me and just something I personally think is right.
