Generally they don't like to soil where they sleep, so they let you know by whining, etc. and that way you only have to get up if you are woke up and that is a win win for everyone. It will take some time so you wouldn't expect immediate results, but he will learn to sleep when you sleep. One thing I like about this is that if my dogs wake me up it is because something is wrong. Either they hear something and are startled, or they are sick. I wouldn't know this if they were not in my room and I definitely want to know! But they never wake me any more to go out and pee because of our routine and their habit.
Callie sleeping on the bed didn't work for us so she sleeps in a soft sided crate with the door not closed and loves it. It's about a foot from my bed and it keeps her warmer because I keep my room cold with a ceiling fan on all the time so I have a fleece blanket over the crate. She sleeps through the night but I know if I hear her tags something's up and not right.
