I read somewhere to turn off your flash or any light that is shining right at their face - light should be coming from overhead or from the side - or take pictures slightly to the side of them or when they are not looking directly at you and the camera (maybe at someone standing behind you with a toy while you are squatted down) and to get down to their level and as close as you can.
