I have not needed to trim nails in years because Max and Teddy file them down walking on pavement. However, recently their nails started growing faster. I trimmed Teddy's nails this week. He is easy to work with. Max won't let me do his.
In answer to your question of how often: every dog is different. When you hear the 'click click click' on hard floors, it is usually time to trim.
