I will put a small fleece blanket in the box so mom can cover the pups if she wants to. The biggest problem with these boxes is that they do not store well but I discovered that I can stand them on one end and stack two together to make a shelf when they are not in use. One of the boxes I had my husband put posts on it so I can put a sheet over it for more privacy. I used that box for a female I had that was terrified of thunderstorms and it made her feel safer when a sheet was over the box. If someone was talented, you could actually make the box with hinges so it could be folded up when not in use.
That's what I did, I made my own. It was very simple and I love how I can unhinge it for storage. You can buy re-cut pine or cut to the length you want. I made it large enough for the pups to be born and run around in until its time for them to go to their new forever homes. It is hinged at the corners with removable pins and along two sides so that they can be brought up and hinged together to make the sides taller for when the pups get bigger. Its low enough so that momma can get in and out and than if needed I lift her out when the sides are up but by that time we have started the weaning process.
