Callie was not thrilled with a crate as a puppy but it kept her safe and from going potty every where and when she was potty trained and trust worthy I left it open. Now at 7 she loves sleeping in her cave and it is always left open. I taught her the command go to bed and she would gets a small night time treat and still does for that.
That's a really good point about the vets. I will definitely keep that in mind.

Honestly, there is really very rarely going to be a time where he will be at home by himself. Our favorite adult hang out (ahem...bar, lol) is super dog friendly, so he will even be able to come out with us sometimes when we get a sitter for the kids. I'm a stay at home mom and my husband works directly downstairs from our apartment.
