It's good to get them used to a crate though so if they ever have to stay in one at the vet or even groomer they will be used to it instead of it freaking them out. If you don't like the idea of a a metal crate they make plastic and soft ones. Callie was not thrilled with a crate as a puppy but it kept her safe and from going potty every where and when she was potty trained and trust worthy I left it open. Now at 7 she loves sleeping in her cave and it is always left open. I taught her the command go to bed and she would gets a small night time treat and still does for that.
