My smallest pup (Piper) has a really fine, silky coat and has to have a top knot in order to see. Unfortunately, Keegan likes to grab her by the topknot while playing and fling her around, so I take it down not only to rest her scalp but to give him less of an edge in tussling.

I've just started trying to groom my three and just last night gave Keegan a cut that eliminated the need for a topknot. He hates topknots and had broken his hair above both eyes trying to scrub the band out. Finn's hair is crazy-looking without a topknot so I keep it pulled up almost all the time. Honestly, it's only partly to help him see; I just can't stand seeing his hair going all different directions.
