I agree with Sandy that this is a great way to help introduce children to how to behave appropriately with a dog.

I'm always really nervous letting little kids pet Max because they want to rub on top of his head in circles, LOL. I have to demonstrate for them how to pet.


I also get nervous when very small children want to grab/pet Phoebe. I have to force myself to remember how important it is as socialization for Phoebe & a learning lesson for the child to be gentle with animals. I always make the child sit if they want to hold Phoebe, and I sometimes even hold their hand to make sure they pet GENTLY.


My pet peeve is when a child rushes up & pets a dog without asking first. I always explain that even though Phoebe doesn't bite, some dogs do, so they should always ask before petting!
