Clear deodorant is an awesome deterrent on appropriate items - floorboards, etc - you might not like the feel on your hands, though!
I know that most everyone here is opposed to rawhide. I personally let Joey chew on it (which he does happily for extended periods of time) as long as I'm around to take it away before he can swallow any of it. Stuffed Kongs also make good distractions.
