I would start taking him for short rides. If we go for a long ride I always stop and let Princess have a break. Sometimes there's just not enough time, but I do it anyway. For the first 3-4 months, Princess didn't like car rides, but after that she has been fine with them.
Gizmo is still young, maybe if you put one of your sweaters in his seat, he will feel close to you. If he was fine for a 60 mile trip on your lap, he just might be scared.
