She has to be on it for life because it is an ACE inhibitor. This helps the kidney's filtration system to tighten up so that less protein leaks out into the urine. It is for blood pressure, but that's because it helps regulate the blood pressure inside the kidney. Does your vet also have her on aspirin? Our internist put our dog on an ACE inhibitor as well as aspirin to prevent clots.
