| Protein in the urine can be a sign of many things. Your vet will likely want to run a urine protein creatinine ratio to determine if the amount of protein is due to kidney issues. He or she may want to run other things. You should not change the diet until you have more info from your vet as to the reason for protein in the urine.

| My friends Yorkie had recurring UTI's and stones which turned out to have large protein content. She had acid bile and MRI done and it showed he had a liver shunt. Perhaps get an acid bile done just to be sure. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My Pixie was just diagnosed with PLN protein losing nephritis. She just turned 8. She was acting very depressed and I knew something wasn't right. My vet did blood work, urinalysis and blood pressure. Her BP was very high. On doppler it was 240. She had protein in her urine as well. They did the urine protein creatinine and it came back high. My vet put her on enalapril and referred me to a specialist. A week later the specialist reran her blood work, urine, BP check and did an ultrasound. Her UPC came back a little higher so they doubled her enalapril, put her on a micro dose of aspirin and fish oil. She is doing so much better. She will be rechecked in another month. I would wait to see what our vet says and ask them about a diet change. I hope it is just from her UTI's. Please keep us posted.

| Protein in urine Hi Just checking in I posted last. Week about my 10. Yr old little girl rescue. The vet did the urine protein creatinine. Test & has her on enalapril fish oil & Im waiting on low dose aspirin that they are making up. I was reading about the enalapril because after taking it for a few days she was lethargic & wouldn't eat.Back to the vet in a month for another urine check. We rescued her at 8 yrs. old they. Don't give you much information about the dog except its hard to place an older dog.She is. A sweetheart from day 1.My. Other Baby girl was 14 diabetic for 6 yrs & blind. I said no more dogs within a month or two I was looking on the rescue site. I don't post much but I do read a lot on the site. Thanks so much for your responses. Sure does make me feel better. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Sorry to hear she is losing protein. Pixie did ok on the 1 /4 tab of Enalapril twice a day. Then they doubled it and she was very lethargic and not eating like she normally did. I called the vet and she said to give her a little time to adjust to it. After about a week on the higher dose she was doing much better. I hope she feels better. Is she still scratching a lot?

My dog is going on this disease for two years now. At her most recent check up, her UPC was down to 2.0 (she started up near 5.0). Her blood pressures are normal and she has normal kidney blood values. So treatment does make a difference. My dog is also on a moderate protein diet with a lowered phosphorous amount and she takes an omega 3 fatty acid supplement. She is going to be 14 and she was first diagnosed with chronic renal disease when she was 5. I am sure with your treatment your dog will do well! If she doesn't do well on enalapril, you could ask for benazepril. I've never had any side effects like those mentioned on enalapril.

| Protein. In urine Hi I forgot to ask what kind of dog food do you all feed your baby. I feed mine Blue chicken & veggies canned in the am & freedom grain free kibbles pm. I don't know if that is contributing to the protein in urine & her terrible allergies. I don't want to give her any more steroids. They help her itching but I'm sure it causes something else. Beyond frustrated feel worse for her the awful itching. The vet gave me Atopika but after reading side effects I still haven't given it to her. 2 boxes still here. Any suggestions would really be appreciated!!! |

| Enalapril for yorkiee life Hi all I am going to pick up another bottle of enalapril for my Daisy. I asked how long she would have to be on it and was told for life.I will speak to my vet when I go in tomorrow. She's a beautiful 10 yr old rescue sweet but they don't give you any info when you rescue. Why would she be on this med for life does anyone know. I am anxious about it I know it's for blood pressure but hopefully nothing to do with the protein in the urine.ive had her just 2yrs.thanks |

| My Olivia has PLN and is on Enalapril and Aspirin. She is doing well on her meds. I consulted with a vet nutritionist and she was put on Purina NF. You definitely should ask about what food she should be on.

| Yes, NF, is a kidney diet. I give her the dry and canned and she tends to pick out what she wants...she is a bit picky but she does like the food. Just depends on her mood which she likes from day to day. hah

| Protein and Kidney Disease Hello, I have been dealing with yorkie being diagnosed with kidney failure (one year ago). We put her on a low protein diet prescribed by the vet (Royal Canin LP). I used both dry and soft food. She was also prescribed medications for high blood pressure and a phosphorous blocker as this helps the kidneys more than low protein. I find that many vets are quick to tell patients their dogs are dying from kidney failure. As a last resort, I took my dog to a holistic vet (who practiced Western vet medicine for 30 years). He looked at all of her blood work and urine analyses over the last year. He said her kidney levels did not indicate she was dying and it was acute pancreatitis that was causing severe inflammation and making her kidneys worse. Through acupuncture and other treatments, a change in diet, my dog is eating again and has gained some weight. |
