Unless you're SUPER gifted with grooming, it won't look great the first few/several times. My first couple times... Well, lets just say a blind person could've done better. LOL But like Mimimomo said, the more you practice, the better you get. Besides, even if you make a mistake, the hair grows back pretty quick.
I think it's best to get your pup used to the tools first. Especially the clipper if you decide to use them. Also, put the puppy on a table or a place with small space so s/he won't have much room to roam.
