How come 8 weeks of crate rest is needed? When Wylie had LP surgery, he had no crate rest at all - in fact, it was recommended that he not be inactive (he couldn't be too active either, ie no running etc).

Ideas:

Kong
CET chews
RMBs (won't get germs all over either, so might be nice to try)
Dog TV (or dog DVDs or something?)
LOTS OF VALIUM
