Default Motion blur panning technique

I've been playing around with "panning" with the camera, where you select a slow shutter speed (1/60 or 1/125) and follow your running dog with the camera, trying to match his speed with how fast you move the camera.

I've had mixed results. Yesterday, I tried 1/125 of a second on a sunny day and got a good shot of Jillie, but it didn't look like motion to me. It was just a blurry background. Today, I slowed it down to 1/60 and got better motion but my focus wasn't as good. I also had issues with shadows.

What do you think? Have you ever tried it? It's fun and not terribly difficult if you've got a camera where you can change the shutter speed.

The first three here are today on 1/60th of a second. The last one is yesterday at 1/125.
