Eliminating the cause for the stains is the first thing to do. There are many causes, including simple things like hair sticking in the eyes, causing them to tear excessively. The constant wetness causes stains (and encourages yeast growth?).

I use wet cotton balls to clean the corners of the eyes, and comb with a flea comb (closely spaced teeth) to remove any debris or matter. The comb also separates the individual hairs. Espree and SPA facial cleaners are great to use in the bath.
