Sounds like it could be kennel cough so it is always good to get a vet check up. If it is kennel cough, last thing you want is for it to lead to pneumonia.
Is the coughing random or do you notice if it happens after activity? Coughing after activity/exercise could be signs of a collapsed trachea.
As MauiGirl said, could also be allergies. With the high winds we had over the weekend, maybe something bothered him.
