I was going to suggest the same thing. Start with confining him into a small area, and as he makes progress expand it a bit at a time. If he reverts to having accidents, limit the area to smaller again. This is what I do with Gizmo, and he's getting it and understanding that he gets rewarded with more space when he does good, and less space when he has accidents, but it just takes time, patience and training :-)
