I agree, get a second opinion. I've heard people say they had been told that early surgery will prevent it from getting worse, but I personally try to avoid any surgery I can.

My little girl was diagnosed with mild LP in both back legs as a pup, and the vet told us not to worry about unless I start seeing any signs. She's so light, the vet thought she might never have trouble with them. She's turning 5 next month, and I haven't ever seen her limp on them. And she's not afraid to run.
