The x-pen sounds like a good idea yes. We have fenced in yard in which the girls that the girls run and do their thing in. It's a pretty big space for them and they love to run. The snow is packed hard enough right now that they can walk on top of the snow and explore all over. They are picking up twigs and leaves from the Autumn season (who would have guessed that these leaves fell for Annie and Susie - grin). So that's the scoop on our yard situation.
