Lisa --
When an undercover investigator for Mercy For Animals documented extreme animal cruelty at a Tyson factory farm in Oklahoma, we were deeply disturbed, but hoped that the worst of these practices could be stopped with pressure from the public.
Thanks to you and the 369,000 other people who signed our petition on Change.org, Tyson just announced a set of new animal welfare guidelines for its pork suppliers. Read on to learn about this massive win, and be sure to join our call for Walmart’s Board of Directors to adopt similar welfare improvements by signing our new petition.
It’s inspiring to know the second largest pork producer in the United States is listening to consumer voices like yours and encouraging suppliers to make some massive changes to end these types of abuses.
Tyson is making recommendations to:
Improve housing systems by allowing sows of all sizes to stand, turn around, lie down, and stretch their legs;
Discontinue the practice of slamming piglets headfirst against the ground to kill them;
Manage pain during tail docking and castration of piglets;
Install video monitoring systems on farms to improve animal handling and increase oversight and worker accountability
We know that informed consumers will continue to inspire companies to take additional steps to reduce animals’ suffering, and we’ll monitor their progress so the public is aware. Thank you in advance for your continued support of animal protection causes in 2014.
Thanks for the support,
Mercy For Animals
PS: The next step in this fight is getting companies who buy meat to also demand better animal welfare standards. More than 60 major food providers, including McDonald's, Burger King, Costco and Kmart have taken a stand against gestation crates leaving Walmart virtually alone in its continued support of these cruel crates. Please sign this petition asking Walmart's Board of Directors to phase out cruel factory farming confinement of pregnant pigs.
