Usually, a cold shower will work (only kidding). Some people use sugar.

Oddsock, if this happens again, I would buy a water soluble lubricant, such as surgi lube or one of the female lubricants. Vaseline is not water soluble and may cause problems if used internally.

Bubba is 9, now, and it is his favorite after dinner activity. My husband will occasionally ask him if he would like a cigarette. The only time it is a problem is when we have dinner quests.
Gizmo is the same way! Every evening he flips his bed over, gets a pillow from the couch or stacks up all his toys and go to town. He has been fixed since being 6 months old. Probably once a week he gets into it a little too much and it gets stuck out to where he cannot get it back in. We usually let him calm down, he will usually lick the inside of his legs and within 30 min he is back to normal.

On days when that doesn't work we have used lube and my husband helps re sheath the sword haha. Similar to you its very awkward when guests come over and he puts on a show
