it might be in your settings because there is an option if you want your sent messages saved. So try this
Go to User CP. Look for Settings and Options, Select Edit Options then scroll down until you see the Private Message Options and you will see that you have a choice if you want your sent messages saved. Make sure that box is checked that saves the messages. They do count to the max of messages you are allowed to have so that is probably why you have an option of saving them or not.
