I leave my girls' alone. Sandy's is all grown out now and I like the "show yorkie" look and that is what I want to try for with Tia (even though she isn't show quality - I just want to see the long hair) I may end up cutting it in a few years, but I'd like to try to grow it out.

Also, I've heard that after you shave it, it is hard to grow out, or hard to manage while growing out.
