Default 9 year old MacBean has some huge growth or tumor

I went to get my 8 (almost 9-Jan 13) year old Yorkie's teeth cleaned and instead of calling to say I could pick him up, my wonderful vet called to say he'd found a huge mass in a routine x-ray to check his trachea before they used anesthesia.
I had another dog, years back with a tumor that was benign, but found so late his liver was destroyed and it couldn't be removed.

My husband is an oncologist and says there is no sign on the x-ray of metastatic activity but...can they safely remove large tumors from a 6 pound dog? I love him so much..I can't bear the thought of losing him or of him being in any pain.

He has been breathing a bit heavily of late, but very infrequently so I wasn't sure it wasn't too hot in our house. Now I know that may be pain. I hate that I may have missed something. We took an x-ray in September of 2012 and there was nothing. I am so upset and terrified. Any information that is pertinent would be much appreciated.
