LOOK UP THE NATIONAL CHRISTMAS TREE ON WIKIPEDIA TO GET THE HISTORY OF IT but it is a live tree. The decorations are LED and energy saving so they say. It looks like they have a mesh around it to place the lights but in areas the fronds tend to stick out. It's really a nice event to see on the National Mall. They even have trees decorated for each of the states with all these miniature trains set up and running. My favorite event to visit during the holidays is Rockefeller Center in New York City but this is also a great thing to see if you're down here in Washington D.C.
