You mentioned the puppy was the runt of the litter... and it sounded like he received extra care that the other pups didn't require. If I caught that correctly, you are the breeder?
I am sorry for your loss so please don't take the following in the wrong way. Not all that are born alive, are meant to stay alive. Now, anything can and will happen but in general nature sets things up for a reason, a runt is the smallest of the litter for a reason.
Please don't beat yourself up over what you might have done to keep this puppy alive longer.... Please do the same for the new owner.... It sounds like this little guy had a bit of a struggle already..... Had you done more, it may have just prolonged his agony or lasted another year before dying, when stronger bonds had been formed in his new home.
