I don't know about your research but the YTCA has researched the background of the YT better than anyone else I know. There are no official records that show what kind of dogs were used in the development of the breed although several have been suggested. Some think that the Scottish Terrier is one of the possibilities. The point, however, is that they were going for a small dog that could fit in walls and small holes much like the Rat Terrier of the time. They were not trying to develop a terrier that was larger.
The YTCA is still building their new site. Hopefully the more detailed history that they have will be back on it again soon. The actual origins of the breed will always be conjecture but it is interesting to see how the breed has developed over the years.
