When we first got Wylie, my beloved cat was still with us (RIP Einstein). Like you, the main thing we had to worry about was keeping the cat litter elevated somehow bc Wylie wanted to eat the "kitty brownies" - UGH so gross! We kept the litter in a closet, and only allowed the closet to open enough so that Einstein could squeeze in there. Another option would be to elevate it w/ cinder blocks or something.
