I think if you leave it out for a few hours that is close to free feeding. I think when you feed on a schedule the point is to only leave it out for like 15 min. And if they do nor eat it take it away from them for 15 min. And try again. The hope is eventually they learn that the food won't be there forever so they better eat now.
