This is my first post to this forum. I wanted to share our recent experience with whelping our first litter of puppies. We have two yorkies - Rocky (9 lbs.) and Nikki (8 lbs). Nikki delivered her first (and last!) litter of 8 healthy puppies on Nov. 19th right here at home. The vet and others all warned us that most likely all puppies would not survive due to the size of the litter. Well, we chose to pray and be positive. We assisted Nikki during the birth when necessary, and her mother instincts kicked in and it was quite a sight to see. She has been a very good mother. Today the puppies are 20 days old and most of them are 4 times their birth weight. All of their eyes have opened up. I am not a professional breeder, but I can say it is an extreme amount of work and devotion to keep Nikkie well nourished and to see these pups raised to become healthy and happy puppies.
