I have a Doggy Door that leads out to a very secure yard, and my (4) guys go out anytime they need to, to play, use the potty, and that includes the middle of the night. The only time I put a Pad down is when it's pouring down rain, and that's right in front of their Door. They don't like to get rained on, LOL.
The Door has been one of the most helpful things I've ever gotten. Scheduling Potty breaks is a non-issue.
