Yes you do have to pay first, but the refund usually comes well before the credit card bill. You can tailor your monthly fee to what deductible you want. I pay more as I chose 0% . It is so comforting not to have to worry about tests etc. it also pays 50% of prescription food costs. I have never had any issue with any claim. There are online sites that compare coverage.
I'm so glad that you have pet insurance too! It's one of those things that seems expensive, until you need it!
