Our Schnauzer used to do that sporadically - he used to itch his right ear with his right back paw, then lick that paw 'til it almost hurt....then it almost used to spread around the back end of his little body....

I will first get him some better food, with no corn or animal byproducts to see if this will help.
Regarding going to a vet, unfortunately I have yet to find a good one around where I live. I will search for that also.
