I'm glad you won't let this deter you. It's so hard to train a dog and build their trust when encountering people who do not know how to behave around a dog. Your encounter is one of the most unusual I have heard of.

I think the man who smacked Max on the head was slightly intoxicated (we were walking in front of restaurants, where he came from). The strangest part was that he and his wife told me that they had a Yorkie. Wouldn't matter if they had a large dog. No dog would consider a smack like that as petting.
