Normally a false pregnancy follows a heat cycle. They can be very clean and you missed it, or she had a silent heat.
I'm glad to hear you plan on spaying! Mentally, this will be very hard on her, as she will look for puppies. You might get her a small stuffed animal that she can cling to for a while. She will eventually give up the stuffed toy, but in the meantime give her something to cuddle to while her hormones get back to normal.
