Just use the small, lightweight rubber bands in the beginning. Make sure the hair isn't pulled too tight & that you haven't pulled any skin up into the band. When you're wrapping the band be sure to wrap it very tightly around the hair so it'll stay in all day. (The bands are all different, of course, but I wrap mine maybe 5-8 times around the hair. Some days I'll stop just one wrap too early & sure enough, the hair starts coming out.) Be sure to take it out before bed & scratch their little heads-they'll love you for that, too!
I bet they get used to it & start loving the attention they get when you do their hair. Then start putting the lightweight barrette or clip in.
