Breeding Certification Question... So...I learned a lot from a great post recently, about all of the certification/genetic testing that is available(hips, LP, elbows BAT, Eyes etc etc).
I am wondering how much does it cost, on average to get a dog all of the certifications necessary to breed??
Also, do most dogs pass ALL of the tests?? It seems like there are a lot of tests to pass. I can see how it could get expensive...if you get a dog who you think is going to be a great brood bitch or stud and then you start on the testing only to find out it failed a test. Then you have to start all over, finding another dog...paying to test that dog....etc etc
Do you have an idea of whether a dog will pass certain things or not before you take them in(like hips, LP, elbows)?
Also...Are there tests that a dog can fail where it might still be considered for breeding??
I am also wondering, do you do these tests before you invest the time, energy and money into putting your dog out there as a champion??
( I can't remember the specific name for when your dog is already a champion, but you are still showing it in BOB...and you are promoting it/advertising it...in hopes that it will become one of the top dogs in it's breed)
My initial reasoning for asking this question is because it seems like a lot of people fail to realize how expensive it is to breed. I had an idea as far as the medical expenses...but when I started looking at all of the Certs you need...and how it could get expensive just trying to find a dog who passes everything, it made me wonder approx. how much the health cert stuff does cost. I am guessing it's got to be over $1000 per dog.... |
