There is a difference between play and real exercise that gets the heart and lungs working hard for an extended period of time. When a dog gets to run or walk very fast for at least 20 minutes a couple of times a day it helps them to use up that excess energy they have. A good walk in the morning and then later in the afternoon along with some hard play, like fetch, will give both the pup and your aunt a break.
The pup just has that energy that it doesn't know what to do with. When you tire her out she feels better and you do to because she will want to take naps and will not be getting into trouble. When they have that pent up energy they tend to go looking for things to do. They do have active minds as well as active bodies and that is why they get into trouble with that extra energy.
Some hyperactivity can be genetic. It may improve with age but then you may find other odd behaviors as well. Hopefully that is not the problem with your aunt's pup.
If the pup was never socialized properly it is going to take some concerted effort on your aunt's part to train the pup. Lots of gentle physical contact is important. Things like picking the pup up and holding her/him gently until she calms down several times a day will eventually help the pup learn to accept human contact and develop a trusting relationship. If your aunt finds the pup sleeping she can put the pup on her lap so it will sleep there for a while. The more she interacts with the pup with gentle and loving physical contact the more at ease the pup will get. If a pup like that is not socialized like this the chances of it ever being an affectionate little pet are slim. The pup needs help developing a relationship with humans. Pups that are left to themselves the first weeks of their lives do not feel comfortable with human contact because they were never introduced to it at the time when they were developing social instincts. Sadly, people will blame the dog for being "stupid" or "difficult" when it was actually the neglect of the breeder that created the situation. |
